A nor’easter, the two women whose path is forever changed by it. Alex lost her son, Teddy, to a drunk driver and the anguish of this sent her life into a spiral of pain that removed her from being able to love anyone. She lives in her glacial citadel and she likes it—the cold keeping the warmth out. Reese has made a life for herself and her little girl, Carly, alone and with no support from her family. Reese and Alex brought together by an act of nature and torn asunder by an attraction and a desire that Alex does not want and runs from. Reese fights for a love that she cannot live without. They survived the storm that brought them together and only love will deliver them from its aftermath.

I thought of rating this three stars due to gaps, but for the price of $3.99 and almost 300 pages, which is far more than you get with many $10 books, I'll give it the fourth. The reason for the three stars is there just seemed to be too many missing scenes or ones lacking detail in the story. Some things can be skipped over in any story, just say they did it and maybe mention it later, but important facets need to be included.

(A few minor spoilers follow): Considering this was a very straight woman interacting with a comfortable-in-her-skin lesbian and the straight woman freaked the first time they kissed, the first time they made love needed better explanation. It was more of a wham bam...then the next morning the aforementioned "straight" woman is making comments like "breakfast"? as she heads under the sheets. There wasn't enough intimacy in their first encounter (at least on page) to constitute this level of comfortableness that quickly. I felt their desire when they made out/kissed, but not in the bedroom.

At one point, one character deeply hurt the other due to a misunderstanding caused by a third party. When the one that hurt the other figured out what happened, she begged for another chance and eventually got it (obviously). However, the reasoning behind her actions was never really explained to the other woman, making you wonder why she would give in and trust her again other than she loved her, but considering how hurt she was, that wasn't enough in my opinion. I guess the author was trying not to make the one character a full on tattle-tale, but the other one did need to understand her actions so she could trust her again.

The story follows the standard formula, love at first sight, have issues, get together, have issues, get back together, have issues, get back together, get married. And that's ok as many of these stories are sweet and comforting to the average reader, but the proposal was basically skipped, then one says something indicating "yes" and they are engaged just like that. The intimacy of the moment when she round-about-way said yes, was nice, but the actual proposal was completely skipped.

I'm not a big fan of stories with children unless they are witty, intelligent, quirky and wise beyond their years and this was the case in this story. The child played a sweet role and helped the story. The only issue I had was I don't think her age was ever mentioned until about 60% of the way through the book. It was indicated she was much younger during the first encounters of the book then older later.

Other than the gaps, the story is good, the characters make you feel for them and there's a happy ending. If not for the important gaps, it could have been five stars.

Disappointing, characters not well developed, love at first sight and I'm not sure why. Liked the little girl Carly-Reese' little girl.
All and all not worth the money. Sorry folks.
Pretty good for a second novel. The two main characters were well thought out. I would have loved a little more back story on Reese, but you get what you need to enjoy the story. Also, could have benefited from a bit more detail as to Alex's journey into acceptance of sons death and her reconciling her preconceptions of herself with her feelings for Reese.
A great book. I really enjoyed the interplay between the two main characters. There was just enough suspense to keep the story going but not enough to overwhelm. The supporting characters were very well defined and played a big part in making the story complete. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes romance books!
Touching story! There is something to be said when a story can capture our attention from the start and then anchors us for the duration of the book. I have a tendency to try and guess how each character will fair in a story and when this occurs, I look forward to matching wits with the author and seeing how close I come to matching the outcome. I look forward to reading more of S. Anne Gardner.
Great story of love, grief, endurance, trust, and passion. Believable characters. Heart wrenching, tearful. Another super story to be added to my collection.
I was a fan of Ms Gardner's other book, (An Affair of Love) which I highly recommend also. When I saw that she had a new book out I couldn't wait to read it, and just as I anticipated it was well worth the wait. If you like your characters to have flaws but substance you will enjoy reading this book. Very nicely written love story, including a child in the mix. I found myself reading very slowly towards the end because I didn't want it to end. Very nicely done. Keep writing stories like this, you have a fan and you are on my instant-buy list.
This was an interesting story that I recommend reading. I liked the conflicts, and miscommunication. Because no matter how you can look from the outside and say, I'd never do that... More often than not, that's exactly what you would do when your reasoning is clouded by emotion.

The only reason I didn't give this one a 5 is because, I felt the character of Reese was not as fleshed out as Alex, she didn't get much time in the book when she wasn't with Alex. So in a way it almost felt like a first person POV instead of a third person. I would have liked to known more about her since she was a main character. Like did she have her child before she came out?

But, don't let that detract from the story, it was well worth the read.
